A Sunset Surprise Proposal on the Lake | Ethan & Taylor
There are some moments I get to photograph that feel like pure magic, and Ethan & Taylor’s surprise proposal was one of them. It all started with the perfect plan… and a little unexpected timing. Ethan got the ring earlier than he thought he would, which turned out to be the best twist — because Taylor had absolutely no idea what was coming.
The proposal was set to happen right before their scheduled family photo session, which ended up being the perfect excuse to get Taylor dressed up without suspecting a thing. No nervous fidgeting from Ethan. No second-guessing from Taylor. Just the ideal setup for a completely genuine, totally caught-off-guard moment.
When everyone arrived, we slipped into the plan as if it were any normal session. I casually mentioned that I needed a couple of people who were ready to help me “test the lighting,” and Ethan and Taylor were more than willing to step out first. The three of us walked to the dock overlooking the glowing lake — the kind of scenery every photographer dreams of: warm sunset light, peaceful water, and a quiet moment just waiting to unfold.
I positioned Taylor facing the lake so I could “check the framing,” and while I snapped a shot, Ethan quietly dropped down to one knee behind her. Then I told her to turn around.
Her reaction? Pure gold.
The moment she saw him kneeling, she froze — eyes wide, hands flying to her face — and gasped, “Are you serious? Are you serious?!” over and over. She was so adorably shocked that I’m still smiling thinking about it. Those are the moments that make proposals such a joy to capture: the real, unfiltered emotion you can’t script.
What made this proposal even sweeter was how intentional Ethan was with every detail. He knew they both wanted something intimate, something just for them. And this dock — glowing in golden hour light, quiet except for the soft lake breeze — was exactly that. After she said yes (with the biggest smile), their families came walking up the path, cheering and hugging and celebrating the newly engaged couple. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
And let me tell you — even in the short time I spent with them, it was crystal clear how in love these two are. The way Taylor lit up once the shock wore off, the way Ethan looked at her like she was the only person on the dock… their joy was effortless and contagious. Their smiles said everything.
Ethan and Taylor, congratulations again. Your love is genuine, sweet, and so much fun to witness. I’m beyond grateful I got to document the beginning of this next chapter in your story.
